Scenarios Under the New Legislation: Margaret is 49 years of age. She is crippled up with a very severe form of arthritis. She also lives alone. Her parents died in a car accident when she was just 21 years of age and she has suffered crippling illness since the age of 24. Margaret has also been awarded a very small amount of direct payment. Margaret’s small amount of cash is to help her to purchase special footwear for her deformed feet. She too has been forced to sign the same agreement as David, in that should she use this small amount of cash for anything else, she will have to repay every penny ever given to her. Margaret experiences an unusually long and heavy period. In her poverty, she struggles to find the money to buy the sanitary towels she needs and she decides to use some of the cash given to her for footwear. Margaret is now a criminal. DWP discover what Margaret has done and they demand that she repays to them £30,000. With the additional fears and pressures Margaret can no longer cope. She has a nervous breakdown and is hospitalised for 18 months. She has now progressed to a half way house. Margaret still needs constant supervision and is given lithium medication to keep her mood stable. As is often the case, the lithium destroys her thyroid gland and she is now given medication for this too. It is very unlikely that Margaret will ever feel sufficiently safe and confident to live independently again. She repays her debt to DWP at £2 per week (clearly for life), from the severely reduced income of a mental health inpatient. reply

Local issues in Aldridge-Brownhills
We're collecting local issues in Aldridge-Brownhills. Some of these have been turned into questions to put to the candidates standing at the 2010 general election in the form of a questionnaire.
Issues are no longer being turned into questions, but we still want them! A good local issue will be about a problem of local relevance, possibly suggesting how something should have been/be done.
- Aldridge railway station should be re-opened, with a large (and cheap to use!) car park. This will assist commuters, students, the sick and it will ease road congestion. (source)
- Since WHG took over council properties, rents have increased by 19.123% (just under the 20% limit note!). Rental increases must stop. WHG blame central gvmnt directive for the increases.
- Too many apartment builds have taken place in Aldridge in recent years, causing traffic congestion and dangerously tight parking which has not been known here until recently. (source)
- Sorry, the car parking issue with plans submitted to resolve is located in Aldridge.
- Aldridge wishes to keep its ambulance station. It is NOT to be sold to Morrisons for council profit! (source)
- Aldridge also wishes to keep its fire station. (source)
- Aldridge supports the sick, the disabled & the elderly. It upholds the current, SUCCESSFUL disability system & it absolutely opposes wasteful & bullying change that robs the most weak.
- Aldridge wishes to keep its main post office and its Lazy Hill post office. Essential!
- Aldridge wishes for ALL funding in respect of the following, to continue to reach the needy DIRECT: The sick, the disabled, the sick and disabled elderly.
- The Parking/Traffic Management is abysmal, with no benefits to anyone.
- The loss of the Market has changed for the worse the Town's image.
- The local police Station is situated out of contact with the Town.
- The High Street has become a lesser feature, attracting low budget shopping
- Comments about the market and the police station being out of situ. will be for B'hills. Aldridge station is central.
- Same for High Str. and traffic. Keep the comments rolling. Well done to all.
- 450 to 500 of the 650 parliamenatry seats are being covered by UKIP candidates. It is essential that your vote is used, please.
- The market comment is also for B'hills.
- Parking on pavements forcing wheelchair users into the Road is entirely unacceptable- When will police etc.. start to use their powers to combat this?
- Youths circulating Redhouse Estate are a real nuisance- They have caused £100's of damage- we got taken to court for shouting at their spineless father- who lets them do what they like - no matter wha
- UKIP Head Office states we WILL be having a UKIP candidate. I am currently waiting for their identity, to confirm.
- In 1998 WHG promised off rd parking where possible. One suitably qualified tenant has submitted good plans to WHG who will not act. Too many cars parked on rd. Cars are being accidentally damaged.
- Richard Shepherd renounces his support of UKIP's 'Better Off Out' campaign, as we are now having a UKIP candidate to stand against him. Essential to use UKIP vote, thus!
- Aldridge is not happy that with its growing population, it has a police station that is rarely manned and that on dialling '999' in the early hours, there is 'no answer' from Walsall Police Station! (source)
- UKIP "we had an agreement that any MP who signed the Better Off Out campaign, organised by the Freedom Association, we would not stand against them. R. Shepherd has put his name to Better Off Out."
- After Nigel Farage's embarrassing and unprofessional performance on a global stage, Aldridge is happy to stick with Richard Shepherd (and his agreement to support UKIP's 'Better Off Out' campaign). (source)
Local questions for candidate questionnaire
These are the questions that have been made out of the local issues Demoracy Club volunteers have posted. They'll make up the 'local' section of a questionnaire that TheyWorkForYou is developing in conjunction with Demoracy Club. Below the question is the local issue it's derived from.
Do you agree that ... ?
- Public money should be spent on re-opening Aldridge railway station, and on providing a large and affordable car park. (source)

Based on issue: Parking on pavements forcing wheelchair users into the Road is entirely unacceptable- When will police etc.. start to use their powers to combat this?

Aldridge opposes the building of the new Manor Hospital, when there are not enough nurses and there is not enough CARE, which are the priorities. reply
