Local issues in Bermondsey and Old Southwark
We're collecting local issues in Bermondsey and Old Southwark. Some of these have been turned into questions to put to the candidates standing at the 2010 general election in the form of a questionnaire.
Issues are no longer being turned into questions, but we still want them! A good local issue will be about a problem of local relevance, possibly suggesting how something should have been/be done.
- not enough is being done to reduce carrier bag usage in the borough. Too many small, locally owned shops don't even ask customers if they want them - they just hand them out as standard!
- The Elephant and Castle regeneration is taking far too long (source)
- Planning permission rules favor large corporations like Tesco, and serve to squash local shops.
- Problem of decent housing in relation to the ongoing major works in the estate where I live. Although the work is happening, there is nothing being done about insulation and energy costs.
- There should be an audit of the Bank of England to measure them up for fraud & treasonous activities
- The crossing at Southwark Park Road and Raymouth Road is a hazard.
- A lot of school children are attending schools out of their districts.
- Conditions of the roads should be improved, there are too many potholes in the road
- Leaseholders of ex-Local Authority flats are treated poorly in service charge calculations and planning permissions. (source)
- Southwark Council should focus renovation funds on cost-effective means of reducing energy use, such as cavity wall and loft insulation in estates.
- Southwark Park Road is lousy with betting houses, bars and casinos. There should be economic diversity in the Blue.
- There should be more patrols around The Blue on Friday and Saturday nights.
- Services such as the Job Centre should be open later for all the public to come and use their services. It´s supposed to be for public convenience.
- Local councils must maintain the town halls open on Saturdays until at least 15.00 hours for all members of the public to take advantage of public services.
- Green spaces should be protected. Nursery Row park and Surrey Square park have been threatened with being built on recently and this should be fought against.
- Lant street should be reopened and not shut for the benefit of one small section of the community (source)
- Recycling services should include Tetra-Paks in curbside/clear bag schemes. (source)
- There should be more cycling lanes to make commuting to the centre safer. (source)
- CCTV does not replace foot patrols to combat crime and antisocial behaviour. (source)
- Dog Litter & rubbish on walkways is a huge problem!
- there is not enough affordable housing in southwark
Local questions for candidate questionnaire
These are the questions that have been made out of the local issues Demoracy Club volunteers have posted. They'll make up the 'local' section of a questionnaire that TheyWorkForYou is developing in conjunction with Demoracy Club. Below the question is the local issue it's derived from.
Do you agree that ... ?
