I've been following the election campaign in Tower Hamlets very closely and there is so much dirty politics going on. In the B&BG constituency New Labour are no longer campaigning for the Bengali vote, they are shunning all public appearances and simply targeting the white working class vote, they think this will be sufficient for them to turn the 800+ majority by also installing a puppet candidate Hasib Hikmat to split the bengali vote. Politics is a dirty game.

New Labour have had 13 years in power and simply have not delivered. £100bn to be spent upgrading our nuclear arsenal when the rest of the developed world are looking for ways to reduce theirs, that averages to £2.5bn per year going to multi national defence firms, money that could be spent on our communities! This is just another reason why New Labour no longer represent the working people of this nation. They are influenced far too much by big business and powerful lobby groups that represent the interest of foreign nations.

Completely agree with you kam. Never thought i'd ever vote Labour but given the options, Rushanara seems like the only viable candidate. We should all remember, and remind others, that we do not live in America and we're not voting for a President we're voting for our a member of our community to represent us in parliament.

George Galloway is an embarrassment for me and the area! He was never taken seriously by anyone in parliament. I will not vote for the Liberals because their candidates is an Imam - and I don't think its right to have religious figures representing me as I am an atheist. I think I will vote labour, but I'm not sure why!

Apologies if i'm being ignorant here, but what precisely has George Galloway done for the constituents of Bethnal Green and Bow in the last 5 years and what do you suspect that the (ironically named?) respect party could offer the constituents of BGB for the next five years, highlighting where they bare any resemblance to the questions and concerns raised on this site.

Saying that, please don't vote for respect! BGB made its point and the area has suffered for it for the last five years! Anyone that thinks voting in the mad scotsman was a good idea please go to youtube and search "george galloway being a cat", it only gets weirder, more toe-curling and more disturbing with every view; THAT was our parliamentary representative!

As members of the democracy club, can i make a plea to you all to do your bit for democracy. The majority of adults in BGB won't vote. The majority of those that do vote will do so with a limited view. Please can everyone on this site do their bit and encourage those they know to do some research into the main candidates before voting. I'm not asking you to canvas your favourite, just try and impartially inform those you know to have an understanding of the candidate they are voting for and not just the party they represent.

the electoral system needs to be reformed to bring it into the 21st century. A number of things need to happen: 1) Proportional Representation - enough of this two party politics. 2) End to hereditary peers - 100% elected house of lords. 3) Fixed term parliament. 4) Restriction on lobby groups - no longer can we tolerate the govt to bend over backwards for big business at the expense of the interest of the british people.

Local issues in Bethnal Green and Bow
We're collecting local issues in Bethnal Green and Bow. Some of these have been turned into questions to put to the candidates standing at the 2010 general election in the form of a questionnaire.
Issues are no longer being turned into questions, but we still want them! A good local issue will be about a problem of local relevance, possibly suggesting how something should have been/be done.
- There should be a dangerous dogs amnesty (source)
- George Goaway is after his pension,after he gets out,he really has done NOTHING
- The roads are awful to the point that they actually damage my bike as i ride
- There arnt enough street lamps. It isnt safe more my girlfriend to walk home alone.
- The council wastes endless amounts on advertising itself and producing its own weekly propaganda rag (see link). (source)
- The Digital Economy Bill is a threat to the freedom of the internet, constructing a virtual Guantanamo Bay (source)
- local people wont really see the benefit of having the olympics in their borough - where are the plans to regenerate the area?
- The local politicans turned up on our doorstep for the first time in 5 years! Where have they been the last 5 year??
- Moderate Islam needs defending both from islamaphobes and fundamentalists (source)
- Anti-social behaviour, poverty, overcrowding and lack of facilities for young people are interrelated - you can't tackle one without dealing with the others
