Local issues in Copeland
We're collecting local issues in Copeland. Some of these have been turned into questions to put to the candidates standing at the 2010 general election in the form of a questionnaire.
Issues are no longer being turned into questions, but we still want them! A good local issue will be about a problem of local relevance, possibly suggesting how something should have been/be done.
- The need to compulsory purchase land to widen the St Bees - Whitehaven road beside the Low Road, Whitehaven
- Whitehaven Town Centre, its infrastructure in terms of traffic planning and its separation from the harbour
- A drive to introduce new businesses into the Whitehaven - before it closes for good!
- Redevelopment of Swingpump lane and Rosemary lane including better signage / access to Haig pit etc...
- Making Cumbria Police more 'community friendly' and not glorified public house 'security guards' at the weekends in Whitehaven town centre...
- Trying to give the town centre back to its decent residents and Copeland people at night instead of everyone fearing to go out allowing the town to become a ghost town used by human sewer rats!!
- A 'family fun pool' similar to the Keswick Spa for Whitehaven Town Centre for easier access than Hensingham
- Dealing with weekend drink related problems - holding pub tenants/landlords to account
- Turning West Cumbria into a nuclear ghetto
- There is a need for diversification of the jobs base long-term
- Whitehaven needs a high-class chain hotel (or one within a club such Best Western)
- Strengthening the para-nuclear jobs base (eg training facilities etc) should be a priority
- The A595 bypass needs to be extended past Parton, with a roundabout at Rectory Brow
- NHS specilisms should be split between Whitehaven and Carlisle (not just focused in Carlisle)
- Broadband access is limited and too slow
Local questions for candidate questionnaire
These are the questions that have been made out of the local issues Demoracy Club volunteers have posted. They'll make up the 'local' section of a questionnaire that TheyWorkForYou is developing in conjunction with Demoracy Club. Below the question is the local issue it's derived from.
Do you agree that ... ?
