Local issues in Dumfries and Galloway
We're collecting local issues in Dumfries and Galloway. Some of these have been turned into questions to put to the candidates standing at the 2010 general election in the form of a questionnaire.
Issues are no longer being turned into questions, but we still want them! A good local issue will be about a problem of local relevance, possibly suggesting how something should have been/be done.
- In an area with a higher than average age, facilities for the elderly are sparese. Because it is largely a rural area, cost of living is high and the State Pension is insufficient for everyday needs.
- Insufficient is done to provide jobs for the under 25's
- D&G consituents are tired of re-cycling issues when collection of waste is being stopped. Over the last year, collection of batteries and waste paper has been suspended.
- We need more industry which is connected to agriculture. Alternatively, why not bring industries which have a low impact on the environment such as glass or paper recycling.
- Our local college closed down in Newton Stewart which provided training in the hospitality industry one of few areas in which jobs were available.
- We need more local employment
Local questions for candidate questionnaire
These are the questions that have been made out of the local issues Demoracy Club volunteers have posted. They'll make up the 'local' section of a questionnaire that TheyWorkForYou is developing in conjunction with Demoracy Club. Below the question is the local issue it's derived from.
Do you agree that ... ?
- Public resources should be directed to improving facilities for the elderly as a priority, given the elderly population and high cost of living.
Based on issue: In an area with a higher than average age, facilities for the elderly are sparese. Because it is largely a rural area, cost of living is high and the State Pension is insufficient for everyday needs.
- Public funds should be used to subsidise more agriculture-based industry in the region.
Based on issue: We need more industry which is connected to agriculture. Alternatively, why not bring industries which have a low impact on the environment such as glass or paper recycling.
- People should be able to recycle everything possible; in particular, collection of batteries and waste paper shold not have been suspended, and should be reinstated.
Based on issue: D&G consituents are tired of re-cycling issues when collection of waste is being stopped. Over the last year, collection of batteries and waste paper has been suspended.
- The local college in Newton Stewart shouldn't have closed as it badly affected people getting jobs in the hospitality industry.
Based on issue: Our local college closed down in Newton Stewart which provided training in the hospitality industry one of few areas in which jobs were available.
