Bethnal Green and Bow

Research more local issues in Bethnal Green and Bow

task suggested by Democracy Club

Sorry, you can't do this task yet. We'll email when you it's available; we're not quite ready!

About this task

We need your help in researching local issues.

When we've done this, we hope to contact all the candidates, and ask them their opinions. It's a massive task to do this for the whole country, but the reward is similarly huge - a definitive database of what all the candidates at this election think about all the key issues - it's never been done before, anywhere in the world. And once it's over we'll be able to keep track of whether people did what they said they would, once elected.

Help For You In Doing This Task

  1. Have a think if you know about any important local issues already
  2. Try looking over election leaflets you've received, local newspapers and their websites, and your current MP's website
  3. Use Google to see if any of your other candidates have websites. If they do, read them to find if they make clear statements on local issues. If they don't have their own sites, check local newspaper sites or facebook to see if you can find anything. You could also check http://openlylocal.com/hyperlocal_sites for any nearby blogs. If you can't find any issues, why not drop some of your candidates a friendly email asking them to say what the most important changes they think need making in the constituency?
  4. You can ask questions and share experiences on the discussion forum here
  5. You can hold Democracy Club Local Meetings in a pub or cafe of your choice. Bring paper, pens, local newspapers, and be prepared to meet some friendly people. We need *you* to organise these get togethers, so go to this forum - and say you want to meet up.
  6. Get your friends to join DemocracyClub, and share the workload with them.
  7. Get in touch and we'll do what we can

Bethnal Green and Bow discussion

JAKRIL A lot of the candidates listed below will be lucky if they get their deposit back! Apr 24
Fred Alexander Van Tereheyden - Pirate Party - pro internet Apr 24
Fred Ajbol Miah - Respect Apr 24
Fred Ajmal Masroor - Lib Dem Apr 24
Fred Jefferey Marshall - BNP Apr 24
Fred Ahmed Abdul Malik - Ind - (party of the Muslim weekly newspaper, editor is the candidate, say they want an independent MP who will defend Islam against attack from both Islamaphobes without and extremists within) Apr 24
Fred Zak Khan - Tory Apr 24
Fred Hasib Hikalmat - United voice - (party he set up himself because he disagrees with other parties views on what the Islamic view on socail issues should be - ie he's more conservative) Apr 24
Fred Haji Mahmood Choudhury - Ind - (impossible to find out anything about him, he runs a business importing rice from India, is the ide athat he wants to represent the Indian Bengali community as opposed to the Bangadeshi/sylheti?)) Apr 24
Fred Patrick Brooks - Ind - (as far as I can tell a former EU diplomat turned anti Europe but it is almost impossible to find out anything about him) Apr 24
Fred Farid Bakht - Green Apr 24
Fred Rushrana Ali - Labour Apr 24
Fred I only see 7 candidates, listed, there are 11 and I really want to know what some of the more obscure ones think and what makes them different from each other. Standing we have: Apr 24
JAKRIL Mind you Jim Fitz is a crook and a sell out. He is simply out for personal gain, he does not care about the people of Tower Hamlets, he only cares about promoting his self interest. Apr 22
JAKRIL I've been following the election campaign in Tower Hamlets very closely and there is so much dirty politics going on. In the B&BG constituency New Labour are no longer campaigning for the Bengali vote, they are shunning all public appearances and simply targeting the white working class vote, they think this will be sufficient for them to turn the 800+ majority by also installing a puppet candidate Hasib Hikmat to split the bengali vote. Politics is a dirty game. Apr 22
JAKRIL New Labour have had 13 years in power and simply have not delivered. £100bn to be spent upgrading our nuclear arsenal when the rest of the developed world are looking for ways to reduce theirs, that averages to £2.5bn per year going to multi national defence firms, money that could be spent on our communities! This is just another reason why New Labour no longer represent the working people of this nation. They are influenced far too much by big business and powerful lobby groups that represent the interest of foreign nations. Apr 22
andrew Completely agree with you kam. Never thought i'd ever vote Labour but given the options, Rushanara seems like the only viable candidate. We should all remember, and remind others, that we do not live in America and we're not voting for a President we're voting for our a member of our community to represent us in parliament. Apr 22
Kam George Galloway is an embarrassment for me and the area! He was never taken seriously by anyone in parliament. I will not vote for the Liberals because their candidates is an Imam - and I don't think its right to have religious figures representing me as I am an atheist. I think I will vote labour, but I'm not sure why! Apr 22
JAKRIL The fact that Mr Galloway didn't sell us out in the last 5 years was good enough for me! Apr 15
JAKRIL Mr Gak Apr 15
andrew Apologies if i'm being ignorant here, but what precisely has George Galloway done for the constituents of Bethnal Green and Bow in the last 5 years and what do you suspect that the (ironically named?) respect party could offer the constituents of BGB for the next five years, highlighting where they bare any resemblance to the questions and concerns raised on this site. Apr 15
JAKRIL I would rather have a mad scot who never shuts up as my parliamentary representative then a bunch of shy uncle tom's who seem to always sell out their constituents in the hope of enhancing their political careers! Apr 15
andrew Saying that, please don't vote for respect! BGB made its point and the area has suffered for it for the last five years! Anyone that thinks voting in the mad scotsman was a good idea please go to youtube and search "george galloway being a cat", it only gets weirder, more toe-curling and more disturbing with every view; THAT was our parliamentary representative! Apr 15
andrew As members of the democracy club, can i make a plea to you all to do your bit for democracy. The majority of adults in BGB won't vote. The majority of those that do vote will do so with a limited view. Please can everyone on this site do their bit and encourage those they know to do some research into the main candidates before voting. I'm not asking you to canvas your favourite, just try and impartially inform those you know to have an understanding of the candidate they are voting for and not just the party they represent. Apr 15
Peter Check out http://bit.ly/cRbMlU at the Roundhouse this weekend. There's free discussions and debates on all this stuff. It's going to be a good weekend for getting heard. One debate hotsed by Evan Davis has reps from all political parties on the panel. Apr 15
JAKRIL the electoral system needs to be reformed to bring it into the 21st century. A number of things need to happen: 1) Proportional Representation - enough of this two party politics. 2) End to hereditary peers - 100% elected house of lords. 3) Fixed term parliament. 4) Restriction on lobby groups - no longer can we tolerate the govt to bend over backwards for big business at the expense of the interest of the british people. Apr 14
JAKRIL I don't think I can vote Lab or Con, both parties are in the hands of special interest groups, that distort govt policy for their own agenda! Unsure about the Lib Dems....tempted to Vote Respect. Apr 14
Somalilander I will be voting this election as usual but I won't say which party. More jobs for the locals ! I also want the next british Government to recognise my birthday country Somaliland Apr 14
Zena I'd just like someone who's financially literate.. Apr 14
Kam Just to make it clear - I don't want a Rabbi or a Vicar as my MP either. Apr 14
Kam I don't want an Imam as my MP! Apr 14
